Geek Aire Fan Review (Bought & Tested!)

This is my Geek Aire camping fan review. I put it through many different tests, all of which you’ll find below in this post.

Quick Summary

Overall, I felt that the Geek Aire portable camping fan was heavy duty and very functional, and I really loved using it while camping on a hot day. It’s a little bit pricey (that’s probably the biggest con), but I genuinely feel that it’s worth every penny.

Check out the Geek Aire:

1. In the Box

I purchased my Geek Aire Portable Rechargeable Camping Fan from Amazon, and I got the 10-inch model. Here’s what it looks like still in its packaging:

And here’s everything I got out of the box:

  • Geek Aire fan

  • AC adapter / charger

  • User guide

2. Charge Time

The Geek Aire comes partially charged out of the box, with about 60-80%. So, I highly recommend charging it before taking it camping.

To do so, use the provided charger, which is a 12-volt AC adapter, plug it into any outlet, and plug the other end into the power input of the fan.

After you do so, the power indicator lights will start blinking. They will all turn solid when fully charged, and for me, this took about 1.5 hours.

3. Fan Speed

The adjustment knob on the control panel controls the different fan speeds.

I used a wind anemometer to test each of the fan speeds and here’s what I got:

  • Lowest setting: 1.5 meters per second

  • Highest setting: 3.9 meters per second

Measuring the highest setting (3.9m/s), using a wind anemometer.

Note: The lowest fan speed was not high velocity and it’s too gentle for me on a hot day, I don’t use this setting at all.

The highest fan speed pushes a lot of air though, and it’s so great in the summer.

4. Airflow Distance

I also used the same anemometer to test the air flow distance, and here’s the data that I got:

  • Lowest mode: 1.3 feet / 0.4 meters

  • Highest mode: 11.0 feet / 3.3 meters

Note: Overall, I’d say this fan is great for a 4 to 6-person or smaller tent to keep cool, but nothing bigger.

5. Noise Level

I tested the noise level of the Geek Aire fan using a sound meter, and here’s the data that I got:

  • Off: 41 dBA

  • Lowest mode: 42 dBA

  • Highest mode: 66 dBA

The author measuring the noise level of the Geek Aire Portable Camping Fan.
Using a sound meter to measuring the number of decibels on the highest setting (66 dBA).

Overall, I’d say it was a little quieter than I was expecting, and that’s apparently because of the advanced brushless DC motor, which helps keep the fan quiet.

6. Battery Life

This Geek Aire has 3 cells, each with a capacity of 2,000 mAh, so that gives us a total capacity of 6,000 mAh.

Note: Many of my other camp fans have larger rechargeable batteries. The biggest one is the Nitecore NEF10 Fan.

Here’s how long Geek Aire fan battery lasts for, on a full recharge each time, based on my testing:

  • Lowest mode: 29.5 hours

  • Highest mode: 6 hours

7. Power Indicator Lights

I also tested out the power indicator lights to find out if theyโ€™re accurate, and here were my results when I was running the low speed test:

  • 5 lights: 100%

  • 4 lights: 83%

  • 3 lights: 57%

  • 2 lights: 35%

  • 1 light: 10%

  • 0 lights: 0%

Overall, I would say that the lights are fairly accurate.

Note: The lights can be a little bright at night, so you may have to cover it with something when sleeping.

8. Handle

Thereโ€™s a nice handle at the back of the fan, it fits my hand perfectly, making it easy to pick this up and carry it around to wherever you need to go.

The handle is big enough for my entire hand.

9. Rotation

This fan can also be rotated 360-degrees, using the 2 knobs by the side to adjust the angle of the fan that you prefer.

10. Stability

The fan also has these anti-slip rubber feet at the bottom of the fan, there are 3 of them at the base which is nice to have.

A close-up of the Geek Aire’s anti-slip rubber feet.

I also thought the base of the fan was pretty wide too, so I found it stable even on slightly uneven ground like when youโ€™re tent camping.

11. Waterproofing

This fan has a waterproof rating of IPX4, which means it should be fine in light to moderate rain.

And when I rain tested this fan through 30 minutes of moderate rain to test exactly that, I found that it held up perfectly fine, although I did notice that the power input plugin was filled with water.

What happened after the rain test of the Geek Aire Portable Camping Fan.
Power input was flooded, but everything still worked great.

So, I guess thatโ€™s why this has only a max IPX4 rating, itโ€™s not meant to take hours of heavy rain.

12. Weight

As for weight, the Geek Aire fan comes in at about 61.7 ounces, or 1.75 kilograms. A bit to heavy to hang, but it’s perfect as a cordless floor fan in the outdoors.

13. Packed Size

The packed size measures about 14 x 12 x 5.5 inches, or 35 x 30 x 14 centimeters.

14. Fan and Blade Size

The face of the fan comes in at about 10.5 inches or 27 centimeters, while the size of the blades come in at 8.5 inches across or 22 centimeters.

Using a tape measure to get the packed size, fan size, and blade size.

The overall build quality is great. It’s mostly made of metal, except for the control panel at the back (this is made of heavy duty plastic, I think).

15. Pros, Cons, Recommendations

Pro 1: Fast-charging option

There are loads of pros to this Geek Aire, the first one is the super-fast charging option, which I think is great to have especially if thereโ€™s a power outlet nearby that you can use for a little while.

Pro 2: Continuous adjustment

On top of that, I love the adjustment knob.

Unlike most fans that come with discrete, select modes, you canโ€™t pick from anything in between, this Geek Aire allows me to pick from every different kind of fan speeds.

Pro 3: Perfect for larger tents

The airflow distance is great too, and this is perfect if you have a 4 to 6-person tent.

Pro 4: Great stability

The base is also very stable, and the 360-degree tilting angle is super useful, which is great for tent camping.

Pro 5: Decently waterproof

And most camping fans out there donโ€™t have waterproof ratings, but this Geek Aire has an IPX-4 rating.

Pro 6: Decent battery capacity

It has a decent run time and battery life, and used sparingly, can last 2-3 days.

Con 1: Lacks certain features

It would have been able to last longer if there was a sleep timer to conserve battery at night though, There’s also no lighting features and no charge-out function.

Con 2: Warranty can be longer

The warranty is also relatively short for such an expensive fan (1 year), but I think thatโ€™s all the cons I have.

Recommendation

If youโ€™re looking for a relatively big camping fan, like a 10, 12 or even 16-inch camping fan, Geek Aire makes all of these variations.

While it doesn’t have the most features of any fan, it does fantastic with the ones it has, and I’d highly recommend this Geek Aire for something big and heavy duty.

16. Bonus – MUST Read!

If youโ€™re looking for something smaller to use in a 2 maybe 4-person tent for your camping trips instead, cos you donโ€™t need such a big fan, check out this post where I compare the best tent fans on the market.

Otherwise, check out the Geek Aire:
