I really liked the Coleman Cooler Quad Chair for its budget price, spaciousness, and features. However, I found the in-built cooler to be a tad over-rated.

What won me over
  • Inexpensive
  • Bigger than average seat
  • Tall seat height
  • Feature-rich
What let me down
  • Cooler is a bit overrated

Set Up

The setup is quick. Just three steps:

1) Undo the carry bag’s drawstring.

2) Stand the carry bag upright and pull down on it.

Pulling down on the bag to get the chair out is the easiest for me.

3) Grab opposite corners and pull it open.

  • Setup time ~8 seconds

Pack Away

Packing away the Cooler Quad is just the reverse.

Tip: Lay the chair flat + insert the feet first. It’s easier this way.
  • Pack-away time ~35 seconds

Unfolded Dimensions

Here are the unfolded dimensions I measured:

  • Width 35.4inarmrest to armrest
  • Length 23.8inback to front
  • Height 40.0inground to top

Seat Size

Here’s the seat size I measured:

  • Total seat width 23.25in
  • Usable seat width 19.0insteel side bars eats 4.25in of space
  • Seat depth 18.5in

Notice how the steel bars on both sides eat into the seat width.

Seat Height

The seat height sags quite a bit once you sit down:

  • Front seat height 18.75in
  • Real seat height (butt area) 13.5in
  • Seat sag 5.25in
The seat height of the Coleman Cooler Quad Chair.
The seat sinks down by about 5.25in when you sit in it.

Backrest

The backrest covers my entire back, but it’s not tall enough for a neck rest.

  • Backrest height 23.5in
  • Usable backrest height 19.0in
  • Backrest width 21.25in
  • Recline angle ~9.0 degrees

Notice how floppy the top of the backrest is. So, usable backrest height is 4.5in shorter than measured.

Armrests

Now onto the features, starting with the armrests:

  • Padding Thick, same as chair
  • Adjustable Rear connections move up or down

This chair has padded armrests.

Most higher-quality chairs will have buckles that hold the rear connections in place; this doesn’t though, so it may loosen/slip over time.

Pockets

There’s 1 program holder (11.75 x 8.0in) on the side, split into 3 separate pockets:

The pocket size is very generous, and you can fit quite a lot in there.

Cupholder

There’s also a mesh cupholder:

  • Diameter 3.25infits cans, but not big mugs
  • Depth 2.75in
A regular can fits into the cupholder of the Coleman Cooler Quad Chair.
It fits a regular sized can.
A 500ml mug does not fit in the cupholder of the Coleman Cooler Quad Chair.
A 500ml mug is too wide for the cupholder.

Soft Cooler

This chair also has a soft cooler built into the left armrest:

  • Dimensions 10 x 7in
  • Closure Double zip plus front Velcro
The insulated cooler of the Coleman Cooler Quad Chair has a double zip.
To open the cooler, pull back on the handle to unzip.
  • Capacity 4 cans
The cooler of the Coleman Cooler Quad Chair can fit up to 4 cans.
It fits 4 cans.
  • Effectiveness Keeps cans just ~5°F cooler than open air after 2.5 hours
ConditionTemperature after 2.5 hours
Chilled can in cooler77°F

Materials

Here’s what it’s made of:

  • Fabric Unspecified polyester
  • Frame Steel X-shaped cross-poles, 0.63in diameter
  • Warranty 1-year
  • Origin Made in China

Portability

Here’s how it packs down and carries:

  • Total weight 8.2lbs
    • Chair 8.0lbs
    • Carry bag 2.72oz
  • Packed size 37.5 x 7.0 x 5.5in

Pros & Cons

Now, what are the pros and cons, and would I recommend the Coleman Cooler Quad Chair?

Inexpensive

It’s a Coleman, so it undercuts most other brands on price, and you still get plenty of features for the money.

Easy setup & pack away

Just 8 seconds to set up and ~35 seconds to pack away.

Bigger than average seat

The usable seat is 19.0in wide and 18.5in deep, bigger than the typical 17 x 15in camp chair.

Slightly taller than average

The seat sits at 13.5in, taller than the usual 11-inch camp chair.

Feature-rich

You also get plenty for a budget chair:

  • Adjustable, padded armrests
  • Mesh cupholder
  • Oversized 3-pocket program holder
  • 4-can soft cooler

Soft cooler is overrated

The built-in cooler is certainly not the strong point. After 2.5 hours it kept a chilled can just ~5°F cooler than open air.

Overall recommendation

This Coleman Cooler Quad is a great budget chair that’s value for money. Don’t buy it just for the cooler though (cos it’s overrated).
