Coleman Cooler Quad Chair Review (Bought & Tested!)

Coleman Cooler Quad Chair Review
I was really interested in this chair because of the in-built cooler. Which, of course, I’ve tested in this review.

Summary: If you’re buying this Coleman Cooler Quad Chair because of the in-built cooler, I tested it and found that it’s a bit overrated. It is inexpensive though, spacious, has great seat dimensions, so I’d say it’s a good budget pick.

Check out the Coleman Cooler Quad:

1. Set Up

To set up this chair, follow these steps:

  1. Undo the drawstring at the top of the bag, and release the cinch.
  2. Stand the carry bag upright and pull down on it slightly (easier than pulling from the bottom).
  3. Grab opposite corners of the backrest/armrests and pull it open until locked.

Setup time: ~8 seconds

Stand the carry bag upright and pull down on it.
Grab opposite corners and pull it open.

2. Pack Away

To pack away the chair, follow these steps:

  1. Grab opposite corners again and pull everything together into a bundle.
  2. Lay it flat on the ground if you need more leverage than standing allows.
  3. Insert feet into the bag first (feet first method), then fold the rest of the fabric in.

Pack away time: ~35 seconds (including getting it back into the bag)

Tip: Lay flat + Feet first for easier packing due to the bulky cooler.
There’s a lot of fabric that bunches up at the top, including the soft cooler.

3. Unfolded Dimensions

As for the unfolded dimensions, here’s what I measured:

  • Width: 35.4in (90cm) from armrest to armrest
  • Length:  23.8in (60.5cm) from back of chair to front of seat
  • Height: 40in (101.5cm) from ground to top

4. Seat Size

Now, if you want more detailed seat measurements, here’s the info for the seat size:

  • Total seat width: 23.25in (59.1cm)
  • Real seat width: 19.0in (48.3cm)
  • Seat depth: 18.5in (47.0cm)
The real length is 3 inches less than the total width, giving you slightly less space than expected.

5. Seat Height

As for seat height, there is a significant difference between the front measurement and where you actually sit:

  • Front seat height: 18.75in (47.6cm)
  • Actual seat height: 13.5in (34.3cm)
  • Sag amount: 5.25in (13.3cm)
The seat sinks down by about 5.25 in once you sit.

6. Backrest

The backrest height covers my entire back but not high enough for a neck rest.

  • Backrest height: 23.5in (59.7cm)
  • Backrest width: 21.25in (54cm)
  • Recline angle:  ~9 degrees
This covered almost my entire back, extending up to just below the neck, but it wasn’t tall enough for a neck rest.
This top part of the backrest is pretty floppy, the real backrest height is actually only 19 inches.

7. Armrests

One feature this chair has is adjustable armrests, which offer basic comfort.

  • Material: Thickly padded (same fabric as the rest of the chair).
  • Adjustability: Connections at the back can move up or down (shorter arms = move up; taller arms = move down).
  • Stability: No buckle to lock position, so it may slip eventually if moved too high.
This chair has padded armrests
You can also reach behind and adjust the armrest connections at the back without leaving the chair.

8. Pockets

As for storage options, this chair has specific pockets on each side:

  • Program Holder: Split into 3 separate pockets (Total length 11.75in).
    • Front Pockets: 6.75in width each.
    • Back Pocket: 8.0in width.
The pocket size is very generous, and you can fit quite a lot in there.

9. Cupholder

The next feature this chair has is a mesh cupholder.

  • Cupholder: 3.25in diameter. Fits cans but not big mugs or bottles.
It fits regular sized can.
Thinner can will also fit.
500ml mug will be too wide for the cupholder.

10. Soft Cooler

This chair also has a soft cooler built into the left armrest:

  • Dimensions: 10 x 7in (25 x 18cm).
  • Capacity: Fits 4 cans. Does not fit plastic bottles (too tall to zip shut).
  • Effectiveness: Only keeps drinks ~3°C cooler after 2.5 hours compared to open air.
To open it, pull back on the handle to unzip the double zips.
It fits 4 cans.
Plastic bottles are too tall to zip it shut

11. Materials

As for materials, the build quality is generally solid:

  • Fabric: Unspecified polyester (thickly padded).
  • Frame: Steel (0.63in diameter), X-shaped cross-poles.
  • Origin: Made in China.

12. Portability

As for portability, the carry bag has a shoulder strap:

  • Chair Weight: 8.0lbs (3.6kg)
  • Bag Weight: 2.72oz (~0.17lbs / 0.1kg)
  • Total Weight: 8.2lbs (Marketed: 8.3lbs)
  • Packed Size: 37.5 x 7.0 x 5.5in (95 x 18 x 14cm).
The strap is non-padded and non-adjustable.
The strap works well enough.
It is about 40% longer than a 2-person Coleman Sundome tent.

13. Warranty

Coleman offers your typical 1-year warranty on this chair, which is standard for the brand but less comprehensive than lifetime options from other brands.

14. Pros & Cons

Now, what are the pros and cons, and would I recommend the Coleman Cooler Quad Chair?

As for pros, this is a Coleman chair, so the price is definitely affordable compared to many other brands. For this price, you get feature-rich options.

The setup is very fast, coming in at just 8 seconds. The pack away was fine as well (~35 seconds), though it took slightly more time to fit the bulky cooler back into the bag.

I liked that the seat size is decently big too (usable width 19in, depth 18.5in). Most camp chairs come in at least a few inches smaller, around 17 by 15 inches.

The seat height is slightly taller than average too, by about 2 and a half inches, because most chairs come in at quite a low height of 11 inches.

Complete with adjustable and padded armrests, a mesh cupholder, huge pockets, and even a 4-can cooler (not common feature).

The cooler is kind of overrated and doesn’t work the best. It works a little bit but not super well (only ~3°C difference). Also, it leaks cool air so pre-chilling wouldn’t have made much difference.

Starting temperature: 12°C / 54°F

ConditionTemp After 2.5 hours
Inside Can25°C / 77°F
Outside Can)28°C / 82°F
Non-Chilled31°C / 88°F
*Cooler was not pre-chilled.

Overall Recommendation

This Coleman Cooler Quad is a great budget chair if you need something not expensive and slightly bigger than average. Don’t buy it just for the cooler though.
