Pros and Cons

Heavy and bulky
Expensive

Summary

TL;DR: If you’re looking for the most comfortable camp chair possible, which is even more comfortable than some chairs you have at home, look no further than this YETI Trailhead Camp Chair.

There are many reasons as to why the YETI is so comfortable, and I’ll try to list them all now. First, it has the tallest seat height of any camp chair I’ve ever tested.

The author sitting on the YETI Trailhead.
The seat height (see line to the right) of 16.0 inches makes the YETI the tallest chair here. The average of the front height (17.5in) and bottom height (16.0in) is right on point with the marketed specs.

Also, if you look at the YETI above, it has no seat slouch at all, you do not sink into the seat at all, giving you excellent lumbar support.

In comparison, here’s what a typical camp chair looks like:

The author sitting on the ALPS King Kong Camp Chair.
This is my second favorite chair – the ALPS Mountaineering King Kong. You end up sinking into the chair by about 4 inches. Believe it or not, this is already pretty good for a camping chair (some are as bad as 6-7 inches).

RELATED: I actually did an in-depth analysis on the camp chairs with the best lumbar support (TBA), where the YETI beat out the rest, check it out here if you need the info.

I also love that the fabric contours to not just your bottom, but also your back; it makes you feel like you’re sitting on a cloud. The seat size is generous too (19.5 x 16.5in).

The author is sitting on the YETI Trailhead, showing the seat width.

Check out how the YETI compares to a chair I have at home:

Backrest Height23.0in24.0in

I tested the YETI Trailhead against an IKEA chair I had at home, notice how the YETI beats this chair in most of the tests.

On top of that, if you’re camping in summer, the YETI has a 100% mesh construction for excellent breathability, which is the most mesh of any camp chair in this review too.

YETI calls their mesh FlexGrid Fabric. It’s made of polyester and polypropylene, it’s super breezy, and never runs hot. (I conducted a temperature test too, to confirm this!)
A close-up of the mesh on the YETI Trailhead.
A close-up of what the mesh looks like.

The YETI also has the thickest poles (1.14in – I measured it) and the most robust pole joints of any camp chair in this review too.

The chair frame of the YETI Trailhead.
You can see the super thick 1.14in poles here, plus the humongous pole joints too (the part I’m touching). In most camp chairs, the poles measure 0.6-0.9in instead, and the joints are 10x smaller.

Overall, the YETI has excellent quality materials and a fantastic design, including but not limited to all these (if I keep explaining all of them, I’d run out of time and space!):

  • UV resistance
  • Made of a single piece of FlexGrid mesh
  • High weight capacity (500lbs.)
  • Comfortable armrests
  • Locking mechanism for seat and back
  • Extra big feet and wide spread for stability

As for cons, this is one of the heaviest (14.7lbs.) and bulkiest chairs in this review, and it’s the most expensive too.

The author using the backpack straps of the YETI Trailhead.
Using the backpack straps of the carry bag makes it easy to carry the YETI around, despite the weight.

But if you want the most comfortable and highest quality chair possible, which can last many years to come, there’s no comparison with any of the others in this review.

Pros and Cons

The highest weight capacity (800lbs.)
Not suitable for hot weather

Summary

TL;DR: If the YETI’s price-tag is out of reach, the next-best option is the ALPS Mountaineering King Kong. Costing a fraction of the price, it still punches way above its weight in terms of comfort, storage, and quality.

When comparing all the chairs in this review with a similar shape, the King Kong offers the biggest, most generous seat size, bigger than even the YETI.

The author sitting on the ALPS Mountaineering King Kong chair.
The seat width of 19.5in excludes the two metal bars you see sticking out of the chair. Even after taking this into account, it’s still the biggest seat. The seat depth of 20.0in is from back to front.
The author showing the seat size of the ALPS Mountaineering King Kong.
One of my favorite things to do is to take off my shoes and cross my legs on this chair. I couldn’t do this with smaller chairs.

It’s also one of the tallest chairs in this review, with a seat height of 15 inches, just 1 inch less than the Trailhead.

The author sitting on the ALPS King Kong.
The tall seat height allows you to sit comfortably at any camp table.

You also get 2 cupholders and 3 pockets; all the pockets are extremely big as well, and this King Kong is easily the most feature-rich chair in terms of storage too.

A book, a sunglasses case, and an iPhone on the backrest pocket of the ALPS King Kong.
This is just one of the pockets on the King Kong.

The King Kong also has the highest weight capacity. I compared the 3 most heavy-duty chairs in this review, and condensed all the info into a single table:

The King Kong has the highest weight capacity, biggest seat, most storage, and longest warranty. In terms of comfort and durability, it does well.

RELATED: For the full in-depth analysis on these heavy-duty camp chairs (TBA), I’ll leave a link here.

However, please bear in mind that the King Kong has no mesh at all, and it also has the thickest fabric of all the chairs here. It’s meant for slightly colder weather rather than the peak of summer.

The author conducting a temperature test on the ALPS Mountaineering King Kong.
If you’re using this chair in summer, after just 1 hour of sitting on it, the temperature will rise by close to 20%. This is the most of any of the camp chairs in this review.

Check out the King Kong:

3. Kijaro Dual Lock Camp Chair (Best Budget Pick)

Kijaro Dual Lock - Testing
The Kijaro Dual Lock is one of the strongest contenders for the ‘best budget pick’ award.

Key Info

  • Setup: 16 seconds
  • Seat Size: 19.0 x 16.0in
  • Seat Height: 15.5in
  • Backrest Height: 22.5in
  • Storage: 3 pockets, 2 cupholders
  • Capacity: 300lbs.
  • Weight: 9.7lbs.

Pros and Cons

Very affordable
Great storage organization
Very tall seat height
No-sag seating
Seat dips from front to back

Summary

TL;DR: If the YETI (#1) is out of your budget, and you camp in summer so you can’t use the King Kong (#2) above, I’d highly recommend the Kijaro Dual Lock Camp Chair.

This chair is one of the most affordable options on the market, and we get a lot of features out of it. First, there’s quite a few storage options – 3 pockets and 2 cupholders to be exact.

Close up looks of the mesh pockets and zippered pocket of the Kijaro Dual Lock.
2 of the 3 pockets on the Kijaro. Not exactly big, but it was what I needed for my phone and sunnies.

Second, and most impressively, the seat height on this chair is extremely high, making it feel like you’re sitting on a chair at home, rather than a camp chair.

The author sitting on the Kijaro Dual Lock.
The seat height of 15.5in makes this the second-tallest chair, after only the YETI Trailhead. That’s impressive.

This chair also comes with a locking mechanism to make the seat taut, exactly like the YETI. If you look at the picture above, notice you don’t sag into the seat much.

Close up look of the locking mechanism of the Kijaro Dual Lock.

I found it a bit strange that the seat slants from the front to the back though. If it didn’t, this chair would have been absolutely perfect as a budget pick for lumbar support.

  • Capacity: 300lbs.
  • Weight: 8.0lbs.

Pros and Cons

Very affordable
Provides more lumbar support than most
Lots of mesh for summer ventilation
Seat height could be higher

Summary

TL;DR: I honestly love the REI Co-Op Campwell Chair, but it’s slightly more expensive than the Kijaro Dual Lock when not on sale. When REI is running a sale though, it’s the absolute bang for your buck.

This is one of the cheapest chairs in this review, but to my pleasant surprise, I found that it offers great quality and features.

RELATED: If you want a quick run-down of other cheap camp chairs (apart from the Kijaro and Campwell), I’ll get that done soon and leave a link here.

For such an inexpensive chair, it has impressive features like ripstop polyester strips, which run across the chair’s nylon mesh to reinforce the seat and the backrest.

What the REI Campwell Chair looks like.
The reinforcing strips are those in black, you can see 3 of them on this chair.

This gives the Campwell a bit more lumbar support than most camp chairs; you don’t sink into the chair much.

The author is stting on the REI Campwell, showing the seat height.
Notice you sink in by only about 3.25 inches. This is less than the King Kong (#2 above), which sank in by about 4.0 inches. The less you sink in = more lumbar support.

On top of just that, this Campwell is second only to the YETI in terms of the amount of mesh, which makes it perfect for summer camping. (It’s actually quite a bit cooler on the seat than the Kijaro above!)

  • YETI Trailhead: 100% mesh
  • REI Campwell: 80% mesh
  • Average camp chair: 20-40% mesh
The mesh of the REI Campwell Camp Chair in the heavy rain.
And in the summer, with lots of thunderstorms, if this chair gets caught in the rain, all the water gets drained out very nicely and it never takes too long to dry.

However, if you have trouble getting out of low seats, you should try to avoid chairs that have seat heights of less than 13 inches. Unfortunately, the Campwell comes in at just 11.3 inches.

The author sitting on her REI Campwell Camp Chair.
The seat height of 11.3in is actually the median height of all the chairs in this review, so it’s actually not bad, but you should still avoid it if you don’t have the best knees.

  • Capacity: 300lbs.
  • Weight: 6.0lbs.

Pros and Cons

Tall backrest with built-in pillow
Can sit low to the ground – 3.6in
Can be adjusted to a ‘high’ height – 9.5in
‘High’ height is not that high

Summary

TL;DR: If you’re looking for a low lounge chair or a low chair for campfire use, the ENO Lounger DL is definitely the best of that category.

RELATED: I actually tested 3 low camp chairs in this review here, in case you need more info.

Why is the ENO the best? First, it’s the only low chair I have that came with a massive backrest, and even an in-built soft pillow.

The author is resting on the ENO Lounger.
In fact, the ENO’s backrest height of 31.0 inches is the tallest one out of all the 21 chairs in this review.

And like all other low chairs, you sit very low to the ground, which allows you to stretch your legs out comfortably. Then, you lean back, put your cap over your head, and take a nap in the middle of the day.

The low seat height configuration of the ENO Lounger.
With the ENO, you can get as low to the ground as 3.6 inches.

But, what makes the ENO the stand-out pick is its adjustable legs. If you secure the 4 legs into pole joints in the triangle middle of the chair, this gets you another 6 inches off the ground.

The high seat height configuration of the ENO Lounger.
The ENO in the ‘high’ configuration – 9.5 inches off the ground.

However, as I mentioned above, anything below 13 inches isn’t for folks who have trouble getting out of low seats. So, even the ENO’s ‘high’ height was a bit on the low side.

Pro-Tip: If you’re camping in summer, I highly recommend checking out ENO’s Lounger with a 80%-mesh-construction, instead of the one I reviewed (0% mesh). I’ll link to it below.

  • Weight: 3.4lbs.

Pros and Cons

Very lightweight and packable
High quality DAC poles
A shockingly tall seat height
Adjustable pillow
Not as big a seat size as a regular chair
Scoop-shaped

Summary

TL;DR: If you don’t have a lot of storage space, so you need your chair to be lightweight and packable, the Helinox Sunset is the best balance between comfort and portability.

RELATED: There are only 3 other lightweight yet comfortable high-back chairs in this review with weights of less than 4.0lbs – (1) Helinox Chair Two, (2) Big Agnes Big Six, and (3) REI Camp Dreamer. (4) The Helinox Sunset beat them all hands down. For a full breakdown, click here – the Best Lightweight Camp Chairs (TBA).

The author carrying the packed up Helinox Sunset by the handle.
For some reference, the Sunset has a packed volume that is 8.5x less than the YETI, and 5x less than the King Kong. And it weighs just 3.4lbs.

One of the biggest reasons as to why the Sunset is so lightweight is because of its high-quality DAC aluminum poles. These poles are known to have the highest possible strength-to-weight ratio.

Now, why I chose the Sunset over the other lightweight chairs in this review is because of its high seat height. The rest come in at between 7-11 inches, which is much less comfortable.

The author sitting on the Helinox Sunset chair, by a table.
The Sunset’s 13.0in seat height makes it 8th tallest chair in this review. So, that’s much better than average. Notice how my knees are level with my hips – that’s the sign of a great seat height.

It also has one of the tallest backrest heights, so I could lean back and rest my head and neck.

The author is leaning on the headrest of the Helinox Sunset.
The backrest height of 29.3in makes the Sunset the 4th tallest chair in this review.

The headrest portion is also adjustable, allowing you to squeeze the carry bag, a puffy jacket, or a pillow in.

The author is securing the carry bag on the headrest flap of the Helinox Sunset.
I filled the carry bag with clothes, and then used it as a pillow by securing it under the headrest flap.

However, if you’re expecting the Sunset’s seat to be as comfortable as the YETI, or the King Kong, well, that’s not going to be the case. Two reasons why.

First, lightweight chairs typically have a seat depth that is only about 11-13 inches deep.

The seat depth of the Helinox Sunset chair.
The Sunset’s seat depth of 12in cuts off at the middle thigh area. Typical camp chairs (like the YETI and King Kong) with seat depths of 15-20in will end near your knee area.

These chairs also have a scoop shape, instead of a classic flat seat like the YETI/King Kong/Campwell.

The real seat height of the Helinox Sunset chair.
So, because of this shape that’s supposed to ‘scoop’/hug you, I will sink into the chair by more than 5 inches. More sinking = less lumbar support.

Bottom line: But those are the typical characteristics of a lightweight, packable camp chair, so don’t let it scare you off from this excellent chair.

  • Weight: 12.2lbs.

Pros and Cons

Tall seat height, good back support
Super easy setup and pack away
Spring-action rocking
Can also be used as a regular four-legged chair
Not a full rocking motion

Summary

TL;DR: If you’re looking for a rocking camp chair, the GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker is easily one of the best – it’s taller, more comfortable and much easier to use than the others I tested in this review.

RELATED: If you want the full breakdown of the 4 best rocking camp chairs I tested, I’ll leave here when it’s done (TBA).

The biggest reason I chose the Freestyle Rocker as the best is because it has the tallest seat height and also a taut seat for better back support.

The author is sitting on the GCI Freestyle Rocker.
The generous seat height of 15.25in makes this Freestyle the third tallest chair in this review. That’s really impressive. Also, notice the seat has minimal sag, giving you decent lumbar support.

On the other hand, all the other rocking chairs tend to sit much lower to the ground:

Rocking ChairSeat Height (in)
GCI Freestyle Rocker15.3in
GCI Kickback Rocker11.2in
GCI Pod Rocker11.2in
NEMO Stargaze10.3in

And of all the 21 chairs in this review, this Freestyle was the most user-friendly:

  • Setup: 4 seconds
  • Pack away: 2 seconds

As for the rocking mechanism, that’s mainly by spring-action.

The rocking function of the GCI Freestyle Rocker.
The back of the chair has these metal tubings (silver) that slide in and out of the pistons at the bottom (with the Rocker logo).

On top of that, this chair also has front legs for regular chair use.

The grooving on the feet of the GCI Freestyle Rocker.
The extra feet at the front made the chair completely stable when not rocking.

However, one minor con is that this chair doesn’t have a full range of motion like a traditional rocking chair. Only the back (where the pistons are) will be able to rock you.

Pros and Cons

Full range of rocking motion as well
Tall backrest with adjustable pillow
Excellent quality
Expensive

Summary

TL;DR: If you want a feature-rich chair that not only rocks, but also reclines, then the NEMO Stargaze might be one of the only ones out there. As a lounge chair, it’s extremely comfortable.

If you’re not using the Stargaze’s reclining function, this will be the neutral position, and I measured that to be 11°.

The neutral position of the NEMO Stargaze.
The neutral position without reclining at all.

But if you want to use the reclining feature, you can recline it all the way to a whopping 57°. That is a 46-degree angle of recline (11°-57°).

The fully reclined position of the NEMO Stargaze.
This is the 57° angle of recline. You can also recline the chair to anywhere between 11°-57° degrees, fully adjustable for your comfort.

RELATED: I tested only 2 of the best reclining chairs in this review, but if you’re interested you can always check out the full breakdown (TBA).

And unlike the GCI Freestyle above, because the Stargaze is attached to the aluminum frame via only 2 steel buckles, I found that I could rock the chair by 2-3 times the amount of the Freestyle.

The author resting on the reclined setting of the NEMO Stargaze.
Me using both the rocking and reclining functions. You can also see the 2 steel buckles where the chair is attached to the frame here.

The Stargaze also comes with a full backrest, and an adjustable pillow for your head, so this was really relaxing and very comfortable.

The adjustable pillow of the NEMO Stargaze.
The tall backrest of 30.0in makes this the third tallest backrest in this review. The red arrow is pointing to the adjustable pillow for even more comfort.

What’s more, the Stargaze is also made of excellent quality materials:

  • Lots of mesh (44%)
  • Aircraft-grade aluminum poles and hubs
  • Thick 900D polyester
  • UV resistance

However, in terms of price, it’s the most expensive chair after the YETI.

Storage bag doubles as foot mat
Weight capacity is low
Middle bar is annoying

Summary

TL;DR: There aren’t many 2-person chairs on the market, but Kelty’s Low Loveseat is, so far, the most impressive.

Surprisingly, for a 2-person chair, the setup and pack away were incredibly fuss-free. They were actually only 3-4 seconds longer than the single Kelty Lowdown:

  • Setup: 10 seconds
  • Pack away: 28 seconds

A lot of that is thanks to the fully adjustable carry bag, which I could also use as a footmat for lots of versatility.

The author is sitting on the Kelty Low Loveseat with the carry bag unfolded as a foot mat.
That’s the carry bag I’m resting my feet on right now.

However, while most of the Loveseat’s specs were impressive, the weight capacity is surprisingly low, just 50lbs. higher than the single Kelty Lowdown:

The Loveseat does better than the Lowdown for most tests, except weight capacity.

Also, one reason I bought the Loveseat is to have the flexibility to sprawl out over it, like a couch. Unfortunately, I discovered there’s a bar smack in the middle of the chair that made it super uncomfortable to do so.

The Rest of the Best

I tested 21 chairs for this review, but we went through only the 9 best above. Here are the rest, and also why they didn’t make it to the top 9.

Lightweight Chairs

  • Big Agnes Big Six: A feature-rich lightweight high-back, but the scoop-shape is too steep for me and cuts off blood circulation in my thighs. The Helinox Sunset is more comfortable.
  • REI Co-Op Camp Dreamer: Mine broke 5 days in. Loses to the Helinox Sunset for durability.
  • Helinox Chair Two: Same quality as the Helinox Sunset but is a whopping 5.5 inches lower in seat height.

Heavy-Duty Chairs

  • Coleman Big N Tall: A great performing chair, but loses to the ALPS Mountaineering King Kong in terms of overall quality.

Low Campfire Chairs

  • Kelty Lowdown: Low, but not low enough to spread your legs out comfortably. Loses to the ENO Lounger DL for adjustable height.
  • ALPS Mountaineering Rendezvous: No adjustable height like the ENO Lounger DL, hardly any features at all.
  • Cascade Mountain Tech Chair: The exact same as the Rendezvous, but much cheaper. A great low chair alternative to the ENO Lounger if that’s out of your budget.

Rocking and Reclining Chairs

  • GCI Outdoor Pod Rocker: Did not like the shapeless ‘pod’. Not comfortable, loses to the Freestyle.
  • GCI Outdoor Kickback Rocker: Sits much lower than the Freestyle, and there’s no mesh at all for breathability.
  • Quechua Reclinable: I actually love this chair, but it has been out of stock for ages. Not sure if they plan to re-stock.

Cheap Chairs

  • Coleman Broadband Mesh Quad: The cheapest chair in this review, but doesn’t offer as much as the REI Campwell or the Kijaro Dual Lock.
  • Coleman Cooler Quad: If you’re not camping in summer, and looking for a cheap chair, this is a great alternative to the REI Campwell and the Kijaro Dual Lock.

7. All Test Scores

Based on all the quantitative data above, here are the scores of all the chairs in this review.

All testing scores of the camping chairs tested by Liz of Camping Guidance.

Why You Can Trust Me

The first part of this process is buying all the chairs in this review, without accepting any free or sponsored gear from brands. To do so, I spent $1,958 of my hard-earned savings on all these chairs.

Next, I spent about 5 months testing all these chairs, to make sure I’ve gathered all the necessary data possible.

After that, I spent about 2 weeks analyzing the data and comparing all the chairs to each other, to find out which is the best possible.

The last step is the content creation, so videos for my YouTube channel and this blog you’re reading. That took me another 6 months, because I went overboard buying 21 chairs. (I probably should have went with my gut and stuck with 10. But hey, one can’t have too many chairs right?)

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out on YouTube, I do my best to respond every few weeks. Thank you for reading this blog!
