Check out the ALPS Mountaineering Rendezvous Chair:

1. Set Up

To set up this chair, follow these steps:

  1. Undo the drawstring on the carry bag, and release the cinch strap.
  2. Stand the chair upright, locate the four corners (backrest + armrests).
  3. Grab opposite corners of the chair, pull them away from each other to open.
  4. Secure any loose poles back into their pole pockets if they popped out during unfolding.

Setup time: ~12 seconds

The author is setting up the seat fabric of the ALPS Rendezvous.
The poles are not pre-attached to the fabric.
The author is inserting the seat fabric into the pole of the ALPS Rendezvous.
You have to secure it back if they pop out during unfolding.

2. Pack Away

To pack away the chair, follow these steps:

  1. Grab two opposite corners again, lift it up, and pull everything together.
  2. Place the chair feet-first back into the carry bag.
  3. Stand it upright and shake the rest of the chair in; no issues fitting inside.

Tip: Ensure poles are fully released before zipping the bag shut.

Pack away time: ~20 seconds (including getting it back into the bag)

3. Unfolded Dimensions

As for the unfolded dimensions, here’s what I measured:

  • Width: 22.1in (56.2cm) from armrest to armrest
  • Length: 23.5in (59.7cm) from back of chair to front of seat
  • Height: 23.5in (59.8cm) from ground to top of chair

4. Seat Size

Now, if you want more detailed seat measurements, here is everything to know.

  • Total seat width: 20.4in (51.7cm)
  • Seat depth: 14.5in (36.8cm)
The author is sitting on the ALPS Rendezvous.
It’s not a super big seat, but it was more than enough space for me (5’3/1.6m, 53kg/117lbs).

5. Seat Height

As for seat height, there is a gentle slope from the front of the seat to the bottom:

  • Front seat height: 8.4in (21.3cm)
  • Actual seat height: 4.0in (10.2cm) when sat down.
The author is sitting on the ALPS Rendezvous.
The chair slouches for more than 4 inches.

6. Backrest

Now, for the backrest height and width:

  • Backrest height: 21.0in (53.3cm)
  • Backrest width: 20.0in (50.8cm)
  • Recline angle: 21 degrees
The author is leaning on the backrest of the ALPS Rendezvous.
This covers almost my entire back but gives no neck support at all.

7. Breathability

Here’s the breakdown on ventilation and mesh:

  • Total Length36in (91.4cm)
  • Mesh Portion26in (66.0cm) of length is mesh.
  • Width20in (50.8cm), with 10in (25.4cm) being mesh.
  • Total Mesh Coverage: ~36% of the chair surface.
The mesh of the ALPS Rendezvous.
The mesh is about ~36% of the chair surface.
Water pooling on the seat of the ALPS Rendezvous.
I noticed water still pools on the mesh and doesn’t drain as well as other chairs.

8. Armrests

Next, we look at armrest features:

  • Material: Slightly padded with a Styrofoam-like material.
  • Adjustability: Non-adjustable, slanted downwards.
  • Comfort: Very thin and not very comfortable for leaning on for long periods.
The author is sitting on the ALPS Rendezvous, showing the armrest.
The armrests are padded with a very thin styrofoam-like material.

9. Materials & Quality

Here is what I found regarding build quality:

  • Fabric: 600D polyester.
  • Poles: Powder-coated steel (middle poles 0.67in / 1.7cm thick; side poles 0.87in / 2.2cm thick).
  • Stitching: Good all around the chair without any loose threads.
  • Weight Capacity: 300lbs (136kg).
  • Origin: Made in China with a limited lifetime warranty.

The center of gravity is so low to the ground that there will be no issues with stability at all, and the feet are decently big.

10. Portability

For portability, the packed size dimensions come in at:

  • Chair weight: 6.8lbs (~3.1kg)
  • Bag weight: 0.34lbs (5.4oz / ~0.15kg)
  • Total weight: 7.1lbs (~3.2kg) (Slightly heavier than the marketed 6.8lbs)
  • Packed size: 29.1in x 7.75in x 6.75in (74cm x 19.7cm x 17.1cm)
The shoulder strap of the ALPS Rendezvous.
There’s a non-padded but adjustable shoulder strap on the bag.
The author is carrying the ALPS Rendezvous on the back.
This chair isn’t too heavy, so it’s very easy to carry around.
Packed size comparison between the ALPS Rendezvous, a 1-Liter Nalgene bottle and the Coleman Sundome 2 Tent.
It is no bigger than a 2-person Coleman Sundome tent (24in x 9in), making storage compact.

11. Warranty

ALPS Mountaineering provides coverage for this model:

  • Warranty Type: Limited Lifetime Warranty
  • Coverage: Covers manufacturing defects and frame integrity over time (per ALPS sales page).

12. Pros & Cons

Now, what are the pros and cons, and would I recommend the ALPS Rendezvous?

It’s no bigger than a 2-person camping tent (~29in length), which made it easy to carry around and store as well compared to bulkier options.

The setup and pack away is actually super quick, and here’s how it compares to other compact chairs. It is the fastest chair by between 3 and 5 times.

Another pro is that the low seat height of this chair allows you to stretch out your feet without having to use a cooler or buy a camp stool or other gear.

The author is sitting on the ALPS Rendezvous.
You can stretch out your feet easily with this chair.

As for cons, there aren’t many big ones, just that this chair isn’t very feature-rich at all, with no cupholders, no pockets, and the backrest doesn’t offer neck support.

Overall Recommendation

Overall, the ALPS Mountaineering Rendezvous is a good, perfectly functional chair. However, I have tested other better low chairs.
